Our Corporate Culture:

By Emma Smith: Our CEO

Growing a tech startup is as exciting as it is challenging.

Whilst the product is an integral part of getting that growth right,

in my opinion it’s the team, how they work together and how the

culture of the organisation allows for all team members to flourish

that sets you on the giddy path to becoming a Unicorn.

My career has been pretty varied and throughout that time I’ve worked in some pretty controlling and monotonous environments. When your job becomes simply a place to earn money rather than be inspired then it’s time to think again.

Before I started to grow our team I asked myself what inspires a techie to spend their free time at hackathon? Why does someone invent something?  What motivates someone to volunteer?

The answer is almost always passion.

A passion to use their skills to be creative, to get a kick out of applying their knowledge, to do something really cool, to learn and ultimately be inspired.

That’s what my team get from their day job.

Creativity and collaboration are our motto. But we’re not just about applying techniques; we’re about gathering information and breaking new ground. We recently sent our VP of Engineering to Paris for ReactEurope, to learn how to combine new mobile technology with creativity and collaboration, and ultimately commercialise it.

I love setting new challenges, and allowing the team the freedom to come up with the answer. Better still I love it when the team suggest challenges that we can all explore together. Some of our best ideas come from our weekly team meeting in the pub on a Friday afternoon. These visits aren’t a gimmick; but because people are relaxed, creative conversations start and can lead to great ideas. Some of the most exciting developments we’ve made came from discussions had over a pint. That’s the culture we’re building.

If I had a pound for every time someone said “if you were based in Silicon Valley …... “. But we’re not. Palo Alto is a 13 hour flight away and whilst the beautiful South West has an amazing creative and techy vibe recruiting clever cookies is never easy.

So I’ve done away with the job description, I don’t talk about CVs and won’t entertain interview questions. I want to be inspired by someone who wants to work here… Inspired by their passion for what they do and how they can make what we do really cool. When I find that in someone then there’s a space waiting for them right here.

Envolve Technology are always on the lookout for bright sparks. Are you one?
